The teacher starts off each day with the students reading after completing their Excel Math Sheets. On this particular day, the main topic they were talking about was Dr. Seuss. The teacher started the discussion by asking students what they knew about Dr. Seuss. She also asked her students what they've read by that author. The teacher then pulled up a website called seussville.com on the SmartBoard. Here, the teacher pulled up a timeline of Dr. Seuss' life. She discusses a few of the points in Dr. Seuss' life. The teacher then set up stations. Some students would be able to go onto the computer and click through the rest of the points in Dr. Seuss' life. The other students were allowed to read their Dr. Seuss books. There was not any assessment or closure to this activity.
I think this activity would've been a great way to integrate Social Studies into the reading content. I liked that the teacher exposed the students to what a timeline is because most students have never seen one before. I think the teacher should have included some sort of assessment, whether it was formal or summative, to see if students understood what they were being taught.
