Today, we will be learning about Barack Obama. It is important to know who he is because he is our president.

Ask students:
-Who is on the cover of the book?
-Do you think this book is fiction or nonfiction?
-What do you know about Barack Obama?
Objective as stated for students
Today we will learn about Barack Obama, and by the end of the lesson you will be able to tell me the who, what, when, where, why and how.
Teacher Input
Read book, “Barack Obama” by R.K. Burris.
Stop at bold words and explain the meaning of those words.
Explain:
-the “who” tells who the book is talking about
-the “what” tells what the book is about
-the “when” tells a specific time an event happened
-the “where” tells what place that event happened
-the “why” tells us the importance of that event
-the “how” tells us how the character did the event.
Guided Practice
“Let’s talk about what we think the answers to these questions are:
-Who is this book about?
-What did Barack Obama do?
-When did he become president?
-Where does Barack Obama live?
-Why did he want to become president?
-How did he become president?
Independent Practice
Have students read the story and answer the questions on this worksheet with a partner.

Bring students back together to share their answers for the worksheet.

Formative:
The teacher will formatively assess during the Guided Practice when students are answering questions about the “Barack Obama” book.
Summative
Students will hand in worksheets as their formal assessment. If they complete 4 out of 5 questions correctly, they have mastered the objective.
Plans for Individual Differences
-For students with autism, I would make sure to have them close by so I could help them whenever they have any problem.
-For ESL students, I would have them pair up with a group of 2 other students so that they can see what is being done
