Content: Sound
Students are brought to carpet to talk about the science concept of sound. They created a hypothesis the previous day about what they predict will happen. The content that they cover is also a part of their annual science fair project. The teacher explains what they will be doing and then pairs students into groups of 2. Each pair of students was given two cups that were attached by a string. Their task is to see if they can hear whispering, humming and talking. Each group is given a sheet of paper where they record their results. The listening activity lasts for about fifteen minutes. After recording results, students write a conclusion to summarize their results in words. The teacher brings the students together and has them share their observations. The majority of the students couldn’t hear whispering but could hear humming and talking through the cups. The teacher then explains that the purpose of the activity was to see if sound can travel through a string. The string was what was being tested. The teacher explains that the next day, they will be extending the activity by crossing strings and adding one or two more cups to test and see if they can still hear voices. This lesson lasted about 30 minutes and is an indirect/investigation lesson. The teacher prompted students and they did all the work. The teacher guided the students and helped them out as needed. I think the teacher did a great job with this lesson. I think that the teacher should have spent more time explaining the concept. I think she should’ve guided the students more and had given them stricter constraints. At times, the students began screaming and jumping around and the teacher had to ask students to tone it down multiple times. Other than that, I think the teacher did a great job with this lesson.
